When training your dog it is very important to determine what make your dog motivated to work hard. Sometimes that will be food and sometimes that will be a toy and other times simply love. Non-sporting dog breeds such as Bichon Frise, Bulldog, Keeshound, Boston Terrier and Lhasa Apso may be more difficult to motivate and have a lower drive for hunting or chasing so toys will probably not work well for motivation. Hounds such as Bassets, Greyhounds, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Beagle, and Daschshund are easily distracted by scent and movement and prefer to work independently not in a pack format and do become easily bored. Most likely food rewards will work best for these breeds. Once you determine what motivates your dog the most they will be more willing to learn.
